Anti-Virus / Firewall / Anti-Spyware Software

Your first line of defense.

Anti-virus software is essential to protecting your computer and your network from the basic threats encountered on-line. Computers running Microsoft Windows are especially vulnerable to the wide array of malicious tools and code scanning the network for a computer to exploit. The University of Georgia has teamed up with F-Secure to provide protection to all faculty, staff, and students at no additional charge. All members of the University community are strongly encouraged to install F-Secure on each Windows computer. For those people using Mac OSX, we have provided a link to a free alternative to F-Secure, ClamXAV.

F-Secure is actually three tools in one. It provides active anti-virus scanning of new files and e-mail; you can run a full system scan on a schedule as well. It includes a robust, customizable firewall which will warn you in case another computer attempts to access your system. Finally, it includes an anti-spyware scanner to remove any pesky advertisements, popups, or other unwanted programs that often get installed with free software found online. In addition to these services, it also keeps itself updated.

Installing more than one anti-virus program may cause your computer to become unusable. Make sure any other anti-virus programsAntivir

Please contact Dorin Dehelean for additional information. Need help with F-secure? Try our FAQ or the Uninstallation tool. Can't remove a specific virus? Try F-Secure's free removal tools.
