The following programs are tools that our staff has used in the past to perform specific tasks. These tools are not supported by EITS or UGA in any way, and are only offered as a place to look for help. Use your own personal judgement whether these tools would be appropriate for your department or computer.
Virus and Spyware Removal
- McAfee Stinger - A non-installed lightweight anti-virus scanner. Safe with F-Secure or Norton already on the system.
- F-Secure Security Center - Online scanner, health check, glossary and Blacklight: A rootkit removal tool.
- Rootkit Revealer - A rootkit removal tool from Sysinternals (Microsoft)
- McAfee Rootkit Detective - Like stinger, but for rootkits
- Process Explorer - Provides more process information than Task Manager, helpful for spotting virus infections
- IceSword - A sophisticated and powerful anti-rootkit tool. Use carefully.
- AdAware - Anti-spyware scanner
Security Analyzers, Registry and File System Cleaners
- Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer - Essential for windows servers
- Hijack This - Notes all changes from a default Internet Explorer install, offers to reverse changes.
- RegSeeker
- CCleaner
Secure File Deletion Tools
- SDelete - Windows command line tool
- Eraser - Windows with a graphical interface
- Ultra Shredder - Another Windows tool with a GUI
- Disk Utility - OS X. Also use 'Secure Empty Trash' on the Finder menu.
- Using Shred - Linux
Hard Disk Secure Format Tools
- Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) Use whenever a UGA hard drive is transferred or repurposed.
- Ultimate Boot CD Includes DBAN and other utilities.
Uninstall and File Recovery Tools
- Recuva - Recover Deleted Files (Do not install on drive with deleted files!)
- Revo Uninstaller - A thorough uninstalling utility
Portable Document Readers
- Foxit Reader - A lightweight PDF reader
- Notepad2
- Logcheck
